Alan Cheeseman

Founder & Creative Director
Alan Cheeseman has over 30 years experience of bringing history to life through theatre, music and dance. As a Director and Actor he combines techniques from appearances across the West End, Repertory Theatre and Theatre in Education. Alan formed ‘Theatre Merchants’ through a passion to bring historical stories back to life, something he learnt early in his career when he created theatre with The Young National Trust Company who brought National Trust buildings to life. He also has a keen interest in promoting environmental issues, collaborating with Paul Brown from the Guardian newspaper and Pete Wilkinson from Greenpeace on a play a that explored global warming at the Rio Earth Summit of 1992.


Tim Laycock

Writer & Musician

Tim is an actor, playwright and folk musician. He has an international reputation as leader of the well-known folk group the New Scorpion Band and is regarded as one of the distinctive voices of English traditional music.

He has provided music for many plays including productions at The National Theatre, The Old Vic, Chichester Festival Theatre and Birmingham Rep. Most recently he has been musical director for The Royal Shakespeare Company on ‘A Winter’s Tale’, provided music for ‘Moonfleet’ at The Bristol Old Vic, and directed ‘The Woodlanders’for The New Hardy Players, Dorset, all in 2013.

Tim has worked with Alan, as deviser, musician and actor on a number of Theatre Merchant  productions.


Mary Collins

Dance & Choreographer
Mary is an early dance specialist of international repute. She travels the world – as diversely as Norway, Croatia, USA, South Korea and Romania, recreating the dances and etiquette of the past, restoring the popularity and vitality of a significant art form. She works with dance theatre and TV companies as an advisor, choreographer and actress and tours regularly giving master-classes, lecture-recitals and workshops. In the UK Mary teaches at The Royal College of Music and The RoyalAcademy of Music in London. Her resource book for teachers ‘The Art That All Other Arts Approve’ is on the recommended reading list.

Oliver Stephens

Actor & Collaborator
Oliver brings imagination and technical know-how in equal measures. An experienced actor, Oliver brings 15 years’ experience creating installations in unusual spaces .He makes sure the set, the lighting and technical equipment complies with health and safety without compromising the theatrical experience or damaging the interior of historic buildings.

Nadine Bogan

Actor & Educator
A theatre educator who has worked all over the world and with leading companies including TheRoyal Opera House. Nadine has a unique ability to use theatrical skills from music, dance, theatre and craft to engage young minds to see history from different perspectives. Nadine works with our education team and has strong relationships working with primary and secondary schools.
